In 1833 Samuel Christie described a clever circuit for measuring resistances that was later popularised by Charles Wheatstone.
It requires a number of accurately known resistances such as are provided in this unit, a battery and a sensitive galvanometer.
The way the connections are made is shown in the diagram inside the lid of the box.
