The glass float is contained within a plastic tube that has a rubber bulb one end and syrings the other end. The bulb is squeezed, the syringe inserted in the battery acid and the bulb released to suck up the acid. The float rises with the acid and gives the Specic Gravity on a paper label in the float. The SG indicates the state of charge of the battery. High SG means a well-charged battery, a low SG indicates a need to recharge the battery.
