This is a tetrode valve. The screen grid is attached to the screw connection between base and envelope, as there only four pins on the base for filament, control grid and anode. The screen grid reduces the capacitance between control grid and anode, reducing the Miller Effect, and allowing the valve to operate at higher frequencies than a similar triode. The gain of the tetrode is significantly higher than a similar triode.
