This is a standard photoelectric tube, with a semicircular cathode and post anode. Light striking the cathode releases electrons, which are attracted to the anode, and create a current flow proportional to the light intensity at the cathode. This current flow is electronically amplified, and used to drive a relay (proximity detector application) or audio amplifier (film soundtrack application).
