A soft metal core is encased in a plastic sheath with rigdes to prevent ink runs. It can be gently bent to form a smooth curve to match the points on a graph.
Mrs Dearden prepared illustrations for publication by making ink drawings on tracing paper. These were then photographed and the photographs sent to a journal.
