Either one is connected between ignition coil and distributor, or one is connected between distributor and each spark plug. The resistor is screwed into the ignition lead.

The resistor dampens the discharge in the ignition circuit, so that there is only one spark discharge and no multiple discharging. This reduces radio interference.

Subsequent experiments have indicated that the discharge is weaker than desired, and the use of such resistors is no longer recommended. Multiple discharges ensure that more fuel is initially ignited, leading to more even and controlled burning.
