A Camera Lucida was used in daylight to project an object or scene in front of the observer, on to a flat surface eg a piece of paper. The observer used the projected image to sketch the object or scene on to paper. This was a popular pastime on the Grand Tour for those who wished to record what they had seen. The Camera Lucida was superseded by the cheap camera.
