This is a traditional masu or measuring box, with a volume of one go (0.18 litre).

It was purchased in a souvenir shop in Kanazawa in 2015. Originally used for measuring rice, such boxes are still  used in ceremoniously serving sake in restaurants, and in markets to measure high value products such as whitebait.
