This ceramic unit was mounted on switchboards in homes. It contains two brass wipers which slide into sprung clips. A piece of plated Copper wire of suitable diameter is held by screws between the wipers. This fuse wire is in series with an AC mains sub-circuit in the house.
The wire melts and/or evaporates when the current exceeds the rating of the wire, and breaks the circuit. A fresh piece of wire is then cut to length and replaces the blown fuse, after determining the reason for the fuse blowing.
