These pens were used with 'Indian Ink'.

Each nib is a cylindrical tube of specified diameter with a slightly longer  fine wire inside that raises a conical valve when it touches the drawing surface, allowing the ink to flow to form a line of uniform width.

This set was used by Dr Norman Heckenberg to prepare diagrams and graphs for publications and his PhD thesis.
