A d'Arsonval one milliAmp moving coil meter is placed across a circuit with a resistor of varying value in series with the meter, to determine the voltage across the circuit at the measuring point.
The meter is placed in series with the circuit to measure current in the circuit at that point. Shunts of varying value may be placed across the meter to bypass any current exceeding the moving coil's Full Scale Deflection (FSD).
An internal battery and a number of resistors in series with the meter allows the meter to measure resistance.
