A crystal detector utilises a contact between a metal and a semiconductor crystal as a diode to detect wireless signals, giving the name 'crystal set' to early radio receivers.
Here, a fragment of crystaline lead sulphide (galena) is mounted at one end of the celluloid cylinder. The bracket at the other end supports a moveable arm carrying a fine wire that can be brought into contact with the crystal to form the rectifying contact.
