The tube contains a series of cathodes attached to the base pins in a neon atmosphere. The cathode is a flat plate with punched out numerals. The relevant cathode is selected by an electronic counting and logic circuit. A discharge goes to the nearest numeral, illuminating the numeral. A number of these tubes are used in a laboratory counter to register an event series such as a from a radiation counter or the frequency of an electronic source.
